Audio guide to Lincoln

The cathedral and the city
Lincoln was a Roman fortress and a wealthy medieval City, with a busy port on the river Witham. Its bishops were powerful; many were Chancellors of England - the next most powerful man in the realm after the King.
Now, it's a pleasant place - the twentieth century seems to have passed it by. But the cathedral, perched on its ridge above Steep Hill, remains - a work of marvellous early Gothic, and full of interesting tombs, stained glass, and carvings.
We'll also show you two of the earliest houses in England - the so-called Jew's House and Aaron's House, which probably belonged to members of Lincoln's thriving Jewish community in the early middle ages.
And we'll tell you how Saint Hugh of Lincoln carried a hod for the builders of his cathedral - and why he's got double billing with a pig-keeper on the west front.
Price: £5
The tour starts at St Mary le Wigford, close to the railway station, and proceeds up the main street (High Street, Strait, Steep Hill) towards the cathedral, where the tour finishes.
